  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
The court may, and on the request of the parties shall, refer any issues arising in such action to one or more persons, who shall find and report the facts, together with his or their recommendations, to the court. One or more of such persons may be a layman conversant with the subject matter involved in such appeal.
