Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 18A:6-30.1

  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • Board: means the board of education. See New Jersey Statutes 18A:1-1
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Dismissal: The dropping of a case by the judge without further consideration or hearing. Source:
  • Teaching staff member: means a member of the professional staff of any district or regional board of education, or any board of education of a county vocational school, holding office, position or employment of such character that the qualifications, for such office, position or employment, require him to hold a valid and effective standard, provisional or emergency certificate, appropriate to his office, position or employment, issued by the State Board of Examiners and includes a school nurse and a school athletic trainer. When the dismissal of any teaching staff member before the expiration of his contract with the board of education shall be decided, upon appeal, to have been without good cause, he shall be entitled to compensation for the full term of the contract, but it shall be optional with the board whether or not he shall continue to perform his duties for the unexpired term of the contract.
