Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 2A:17-51

  • Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State. On presentation of the execution mentioned in section 2A:17-50 of this title by the officer to whom delivered, for collection to the person or persons from whom such wages, debts, earnings, salary, income from trust funds or profits are due and owing, or thereafter become due and owing to the judgment debtor, such execution shall become a lien and a continuing levy upon the wages, debts, earnings, salary, income from trust funds or profits due or to become due to such judgment debtor to the amount specified therein.
