The objectives of mined land reclamation are:

(1)  to return the land, concurrently with mining or within a reasonable amount of time thereafter, to a stable ecological condition compatible with past, present, and probable future local land uses;

  • Land: includes :Utah Code 68-3-12.5
  • Off-site: means the land areas that are outside of or beyond the on-site land. See Utah Code 40-8-4
  • On-site: means the surface lands on or under which surface or underground mining operations are conducted. See Utah Code 40-8-4
  • Reclamation: means actions performed during or after mining operations to shape, stabilize, revegetate, or treat the land affected in order to achieve a safe, stable ecological condition and use that is consistent with local environmental conditions. See Utah Code 40-8-4
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes a state, district, or territory of the United States. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5
(2)  to minimize or prevent present and future on-site or off-site environmental degradation caused by mining operations to the ecologic and hydrologic regimes and to meet other pertinent state and federal regulations regarding air and water quality standards and health and safety criteria; and

(3)  to minimize or prevent future hazards to public safety and welfare.
