Terms Used In West Virginia Code > Chapter 18C > Article 6 - West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship Program

  • ABET: means the accrediting board for engineering and technology. See West Virginia Code 18C-6-2
  • ABET approved engineering major: means a major approved by ABET'. See West Virginia Code 18C-6-2
  • Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • Bequest: Property gifted by will.
  • Eligible institution of higher education: means :

    (1) A state institution of higher education as defined in section two, article one, chapter . See West Virginia Code 18C-6-2

  • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Industry-based certification: means any special certification required, necessary or deemed preferred for employment in the field. See West Virginia Code 18C-6-2
  • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
  • Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
  • Science: means a major in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics or mathematics at an eligible institution of higher education or any other major as approved by the higher education governing boards by rule. See West Virginia Code 18C-6-2
  • Senior administrator: means the vice chancellor for administration employed pursuant to section two, article four, chapter . See West Virginia Code 18C-1-2
  • State: when applied to a part of the United States and not restricted by the context, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories, and the words "United States" also include the said district and territories. See West Virginia Code 2-2-10
