Perjury

The common-law crime of perjury is now governed by both state and federal laws. It occurs when someone purposefully makes a false statement during a judicial proceeding after having taken an oath to speak the truth. The act is intentional and can be either spoken or in writing. Perjury takes place when the false information concerns matters material to an official proceeding.
