Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 2A:168-21
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
Persons confined in “Compact Institutions” pursuant to the terms of the compact shall at all times be subject to the jurisdiction of the sending State and may at any time be removed from said “Compact Institution” for transfer to a prison or other correctional institution within the sending State, for return to probation or parole, for discharge, or for any other purpose permitted by the laws of the sending State.
