- Acquire: when used in connection with a grant of power to any person, includes the acquisition by purchase, grant, gift or bequest. See Wisconsin Statutes 990.01
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Apprentice: means a person engaged in the learning of the practice of funeral directing under the instruction and personal supervision of a funeral director who is licensed under this chapter and whose funeral establishment is located in this state. See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- Compensation: means direct or indirect payment, including the expectation of payment whether or not actually received. See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Decedent: A deceased person.
- Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.
- Embalming: means disinfecting or preserving dead human bodies, entire or in part, by the use of chemical substances, fluids or gases in the body, or by the introduction of same into the body by vascular or hypodermic injection, or by direct application into the organs or cavities for the purpose of preservation or disinfection. - Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs.
- Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Examining board: means the funeral directors examining board. See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01
- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: A government corporation that insures the deposits of all national and state banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Source: OCC
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- funeral director: means any of the following:
(a) A person engaged in or conducting, or holding himself or herself out, in whole or in part, as being engaged in any of the following:

See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01Funeral establishment: means any building or part of a building used and held out to the public as being used for caring or preparing for the burial or transportation of dead human bodies or for holding or conducting of funeral services. See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01 Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases. Jurisprudence: The study of law and the structure of the legal system. Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. Person: includes firm, corporation, partnership, cooperative, unincorporated cooperative association, and association of individuals. See Wisconsin Statutes 445.01 Personal property: includes money, goods, chattels, things in action, evidences of debt and energy. Preparation room: means any building or part of a building used for embalming, caring for, or preparing for burial or transportation dead human bodies. See Wisconsin Statutes 990.01 Qualified: when applied to any person elected or appointed to office, means that such person has done those things which the person was by law required to do before entering upon the duties of the person's office. United States: includes the District of Columbia, the states, the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the territories organized by congress.
