  • Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
  • Appraisal: A determination of property value.
  • authority: The Alabama Trade School and Junior College Authority organized under the provisions of this article. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • bonds: The bonds issued under the provisions of this article. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • BUILDING COMMISSION: The Alabama Building Commission. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • circuit: means judicial circuit. See Alabama Code 30-3D-608
  • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • director: The Chief Executive Officer of the Alabama State Port Authority. See Alabama Code 16-60-39
  • docks: Alabama state docks. See Alabama Code 16-60-39
  • Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
  • following: means next after. See Alabama Code 30-3D-608
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
  • JUNIOR COLLEGE: An educational institution offering instruction in the arts and sciences on the level of difficulty of the first two years above high school level. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
  • Misdemeanor: Usually a petty offense, a less serious crime than a felony, punishable by less than a year of confinement.
  • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
  • ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT: The total original equipment, machinery and facilities acquired and installed or stored in a trade school or junior college for purposes of instruction, operation and maintenance. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • Outlays: Outlays are payments made (generally through the issuance of checks or disbursement of cash) to liquidate obligations. Outlays during a fiscal year may be for payment of obligations incurred in prior years or in the same year.
  • PORT AUTHORITY: The Alabama State Port Authority. See Alabama Code 16-60-39
  • property: includes both real and personal property. See Alabama Code 30-3D-608
  • Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
  • Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
  • state: The State of Alabama. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • TRADE SCHOOL: An educational institution offering instruction primarily in useful trades, occupations or vocational skills. See Alabama Code 16-60-81
  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
  • United States: includes the territories thereof and the District of Columbia. See Alabama Code 30-3D-608
  • writing: includes typewriting and printing on paper. See Alabama Code 30-3D-608
