(a) The director shall establish a program that permits the renewal of identification cards by mail or through the department‘s Internet Web site.

(b) The initial application for the identification card shall be pursuant to Section 13000. After January 1, 2018, the first renewal for a person 62 years of age or older shall be for an eight-year period with a maximum of one renewal by mail or through the department’s Internet Web site. All other renewals shall be for a six-year period with a maximum of two renewals by mail or through the department’s Internet Web site.

  • Department: means the Department of Motor Vehicles except, when used in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 2100) of Division 2 and in Divisions 11 (commencing with Section 21000), 12 (commencing with Section 24000), 13 (commencing with Section 29000), 14 (commencing with Section 31600), 14.   • Person: includes a natural person, firm, copartnership, association, limited liability company, or corporation. See California Vehicle Code 470

(c) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2018.
