Terms Used In Delaware Code > Title 11 > Chapter 51 > Subchapter III - Child Victims and Witnesses

  • Child: shall mean a person who has not yet reached their eighteenth birthday. See Delaware Code Title 11 Sec. 5132
  • Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
  • Juror: A person who is on the jury.
  • State: means the State of Delaware; and when applied to different parts of the United States, it includes the District of Columbia and the several territories and possessions of the United States. See Delaware Code Title 1 Sec. 302
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
  • Testify: Answer questions in court.
  • Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
  • Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
  • Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
  • Year: means a calendar year, and is equivalent to the words "year of our Lord. See Delaware Code Title 1 Sec. 302
