1. An attendant who controls patron restraints or the operation, starting, stopping, or speed of an amusement ride shall be at least sixteen years of age.

Terms Used In Iowa Code 88A.18

  • Amusement ride: means any mechanized device or combination of devices which carries passengers along, around, or over a fixed or restricted course for the purpose of giving its passengers amusement, pleasure, thrills, or excitement. See Iowa Code 88A.1
  • Carnival: means an enterprise offering amusement or entertainment to the public in, upon, or by means of amusement devices or rides or concession booths. See Iowa Code 88A.1
  • Fair: means an enterprise principally devoted to the exhibition of products of agriculture or industry in connection with the operation of amusement rides or devices or concession booths. See Iowa Code 88A.1
  • following: when used by way of reference to a chapter or other part of a statute mean the next preceding or next following chapter or other part. See Iowa Code 4.1
  • Operator: includes an agency of the state or any of its political subdivisions. See Iowa Code 88A.1
  • person: means individual, corporation, limited liability company, government or governmental subdivision or agency, business trust, estate, trust, partnership or association, or any other legal entity. See Iowa Code 4.1
 2. An operator shall require that a person complete training as provided in this subsection prior to beginning work as an attendant. The training shall consist of, at minimum, the following topics:

 a. The operating procedures specific to any amusement ride the attendant will control, including the specific duties applicable to each of the amusement ride’s assigned positions.
 b. The general procedures of the carnival or fair.
 c. The general safety procedures, and safety procedures specific to any amusement ride the attendant will control, that the attendant must follow in the event of an unusual condition, interruption in operation, injury, emergency, or evacuation.
