  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.

If at the end of a fiscal year a school district has a combined balance remaining in its teachers’ and incidental funds of less than one percent of the amount expended from the funds during the previous fiscal year, the department of elementary and secondary education shall send a notice advising the board of education and the chief operating officer of the district of such fact. The department of elementary and secondary education shall send a copy of such notice to the boards of education and chief operating officers of all adjoining school districts.
