(1) Any applicant for a teaching license to provide education to students who are blind, as defined in ORS § 343.565, shall be required to demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing Braille, as defined in ORS § 343.565.

Terms Used In Oregon Statutes 342.153

  • Teacher: includes all licensed employees in the public schools or employed by an education service district who have direct responsibility for instruction or coordination of educational programs and who are compensated for their services from public funds. See Oregon Statutes 342.120
  • Teaching license: means a license issued under ORS § 342. See Oregon Statutes 342.120

(2) Any applicant for a teaching license to provide education to students who are blind shall be required to demonstrate proficiency by completion of grade I and grade II Braille coursework at a college level.

(3) The Teacher Standards and Practices Commission shall adopt procedures to assess the proficiencies developed through workshops and courses in grade I and grade II Braille that are consistent with standards set by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Library of Congress.
