As used in this part, unless the context otherwise requires:

(1) “Olympic competition” means the official Olympic games, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee, in which the United States competes as a national body;

  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Employer: means :
    (A) The state or any department, commission, institution, board or agency of the state government by which a member is paid, with respect to members in its employ. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • Olympic competition: means the official Olympic games, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee, in which the United States competes as a national body. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1101
  • Person: includes a corporation, firm, company or association. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
  • Public employee: means any person holding a position by appointment or employment in the service of a public employer. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1101
  • Public school: means any school conducted within the state under the authority and supervision of a duly elected or appointed city or county school board, and any educational institution supported by and under the control of the state. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • Service: means service as a general employee, a teacher, a state police officer, a wildlife officer, a firefighter, a police officer, a state judge, a county judge, an attorney general, a commissioner or a county official which is paid for by an employer, and also includes service for which a former member of the general assembly is entitled to under former §. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • State: means the state of Tennessee. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • United States: includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
(2) “Pan-American competition” means the official Pan-American games, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee, in which the United States competes as a national body;
(3) “Public employee” means any person holding a position by appointment or employment in the service of a public employer;
(4) “Public employer” means:

(A) The state of Tennessee;
(B) A county, city, town, municipality or any other political subdivision of the state;
(C) A school district or any governmental entity operating a public school, vocational school, technical school, college, junior college or university;
(D) A public improvement or special district;
(E) A public authority, commission or public benefit corporation; or
(F) Any other public corporation, agency or instrumentality or unit of government which exercises governmental powers under the laws of the state;
(5) “Team” means any group leader, coach, official or athlete who comprises the official delegation of the United States to world, Pan-American or Olympic competition; and
(6) “World level competition” means any amateur competition between any athlete or athletes representing the United States and any athlete or athletes representing any foreign country, where the competition is sanctioned by the national governing body of the United States for that sport in which the public employee seeking leave under this provision plans to compete.
