  • Administrator: means the administrator of veterans affairs of the United States, or the administrator's successor. See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
  • Adversary counsel: means a private lawyer hired by a respondent to represent the respondent's interest in any action under this chapter and chapters 2 and 3 of this title. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

  • Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
  • Affirmed: In the practice of the appellate courts, the decree or order is declared valid and will stand as rendered in the lower court.
  • Agriculture: means :

    • (i) The land, buildings and machinery used in the commercial production of farm products and nursery stock. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105

    • Air contaminant: means particulate matter, dust, fumes, gas, mist, smoke, or vapor, or any combinations thereof. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
    • Air contaminant source: means any and all sources of emission of air contaminants, whether privately or publicly owned or operated. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
    • Air pollution: means presence in the outdoor atmosphere of one (1) or more air contaminants in sufficient quantities and of such characteristics and duration as to be injurious to human, plant or animal life or to property, or which unreasonably interfere with the enjoyment of life and property. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
    • Allegation: something that someone says happened.
    • Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
    • Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
    • Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
    • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
    • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
    • Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
    • Association: means the Tennessee insurance guaranty association. See Tennessee Code 4-31-803
    • Association: means the Tennessee property and casualty insurance association. See Tennessee Code 56-41-101
    • Atomic energy: means all forms of energy released in the course of nuclear fission or nuclear transformation. See Tennessee Code 68-202-101
    • Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
    • Attorney: means the person designated and authorized by subscribers as the attorney-in-fact having authority to obligate them on reciprocal insurance contracts. See Tennessee Code 56-16-102
    • Attorney ad litem: means an attorney appointed by the court to act as counsel for the respondent. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

    • Attorney general: means the attorney general and reporter and any assistant thereto by whatever name known, any district attorney general and any assistant thereto by whatever name called, and any officer or full-time employee of the general assembly or any committee thereof established by statute, who is duly licensed to practice law in Tennessee, whose duty it is to provide facilities for drafting bills or to assist individual legislators in drafting bills or who renders legal advice and services to the members of the general assembly or committees thereof.     • Attorney-in-fact: A person who, acting as an agent, is given written authorization by another person to transact business for him (her) out of court.
    • Authority: means the Tennessee local development authority, a public agency and instrumentality of the state, created by this chapter, or if such authority shall be abolished, the board, body, commission or agency succeeding to the principal functions thereof or to which the powers and duties granted or imposed upon the authority shall be given by law. See Tennessee Code 4-31-102
    • bank: means a system of accounting for voluntarily pooled and irrevocably donated accumulated personal sick leave which is collected for the purpose of providing sick leave to members of the program who have suffered a personal illness, surgery, disability or quarantine and whose sick leave is exhausted. See Tennessee Code 8-50-901
    • Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
    • Beneficiary: means any person, persons or institution receiving a retirement allowance or other benefit as provided in chapters 34-37 of this title. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
    • Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
    • Benefits: means all moneys paid or payable by the United States through the veterans administration. See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
    • board: means the board provided for in part 3 of this chapter. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
    • Board: means the air pollution control board. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
    • Bond: means any bond authorized and issued pursuant to this chapter. See Tennessee Code 4-31-102
    • Bonds: means all bonds, notes or other obligations issued by the authority under this part. See Tennessee Code 4-31-803
    • By-product material: means any radioactive materials, except special nuclear materials, yielded in or made radioactive by exposure to the radiation incident to the process of producing or utilizing special nuclear materials. See Tennessee Code 68-202-101
    • claims: means a covered claim as defined in §. See Tennessee Code 4-31-803
    • co-conservators: means a person or persons or an entity appointed by the court to exercise the decision-making rights and duties of the person with a disability in one or more areas in which the person lacks capacity as determined and required by the orders of the court. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101
    • Code: includes the Tennessee Code and all amendments and revisions to the code and all additions and supplements to the code. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
    • Codicil: An addition, change, or supplement to a will executed with the same formalities required for the will itself.
    • Commercial unit: means such a unit of goods as by commercial usage is a single whole for purposes of lease and division of which materially impairs its character or value on the market or in use. See Tennessee Code -103
    • Commissioner: means the commissioner of environment and conservation or the commissioner's designated representative. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401
    • Commissioner: means any person in office as a member of the public service commission, as prescribed by title 65, chapter 1, prior to June 30, 1996. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
    • Commissioner: means the commissioner of commerce and insurance. See Tennessee Code 56-1-102

    • Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.
    • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
    • Conservatorship: is a proceeding in which a court removes the decision-making powers and duties, in whole or in part, in a least restrictive manner, from a person with a disability who lacks capacity to make decisions in one or more important areas and places responsibility for one or more of those decisions in a conservator or co-conservators. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

    • Consumer lease: means a lease that a lessor regularly engaged in the business of leasing or selling makes to a lessee who is an individual and who takes under the lease primarily for a personal, family, or household purpose, if the total payments to be made under the lease contract, excluding payments for options to renew or buy, do not exceed twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000).     • Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
    • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
    • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
    • Corporate surety: means a corporation admitted to do business in the state and licensed under title 56, chapter 2. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

    • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
    • County mayor: means and includes "county executive" unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
    • Court: means any court having jurisdiction to hear matters concerning guardians or conservators. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

    • Creditable service: means prior service plus membership service, as provided in part 6 of this chapter. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
    • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
    • Deed: The legal instrument used to transfer title in real property from one person to another.
    • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
    • Department: refers to the department of environment and conservation. See Tennessee Code 68-202-202
    • Department: means the department of environment and conservation. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401

    • Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.

    • Durable power of attorney for health care: means a durable power of attorney to the extent that it authorizes an attorney in fact to make health care decisions for the principal. See Tennessee Code 34-6-201
    • Employee organization: means any organization:

      • (A) With membership open to all state employees. See Tennessee Code 8-50-901

      • Employer: means :

        • (A) The state or any department, commission, institution, board or agency of the state government by which a member is paid, with respect to members in its employ. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101

        • Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs.
        • Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts
        • Estate: means income on hand and assets acquired partially or wholly with "income". See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
        • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
        • Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
        • Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
        • Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: A government corporation that insures the deposits of all national and state banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Source: OCC
        • Felony: A crime carrying a penalty of more than a year in prison.
        • Fiduciary: means a guardian, coguardian, conservator, co-conservator, or qualified trustee as defined in §. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

        • FIMR: means the Tennessee fetal and infant mortality review program. See Tennessee Code 68-142-203
        • Finance lease: means a lease with respect to which:

          • (i) the lessor does not select, manufacture, or supply the goods. See Tennessee Code -103

          • Financial institution: means a bank as defined by §. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101
          • Firefighter: means a person in the employ of a political subdivision participating under chapter 35, part 2 of this title who is a member of the fire department of such political subdivision, and is trained in firefighting and actively engaged in such work or subject to call for such services, providing such person's primary livelihood is derived from such work. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
          • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
          • Foreign: when used without limitation, includes all companies formed by authority of any other state or government. See Tennessee Code 56-1-102
          • Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
          • funding board: means the board created pursuant to §. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1202
          • Garnishment: Generally, garnishment is a court proceeding in which a creditor asks a court to order a third party who owes money to the debtor or otherwise holds assets belonging to the debtor to turn over to the creditor any of the debtor
          • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
          • Goods: means all things that are movable at the time of identification to the lease contract, or are fixtures (§ 47-2A-309), but the term does not include money, documents, instruments, accounts, chattel paper, general intangibles, or minerals or the like, including oil and gas, before extraction. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
          • Guardian: means any fiduciary for the person or estate of a ward. See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
          • Guardian ad litem: means a person meeting the qualifications set forth in §. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

          • Health care: means any care, treatment, service or procedure to maintain, diagnose or treat an individual's physical or mental condition, and includes medical care as defined in §. See Tennessee Code 34-6-201

          • Health care institution: means a health care institution as defined in §. See Tennessee Code 34-6-201
          • Health care provider: means a person who is licensed, certified or otherwise authorized or permitted by the laws of this state to administer health care in the ordinary course of business or practice of a profession. See Tennessee Code 34-6-201
          • In loco parentis: means "in the place of a parent" and refers to the legal responsibility taken by a person or organization to assume some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent or legal guardian. See Tennessee Code 34-6-401
          • Income: means moneys received from the veterans administration and revenue or profit from any property wholly or partially acquired with those moneys. See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
          • Indemnification: In general, a collateral contract or assurance under which one person agrees to secure another person against either anticipated financial losses or potential adverse legal consequences. Source: FDIC
          • Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
          • Injunction: An order of the court prohibiting (or compelling) the performance of a specific act to prevent irreparable damage or injury.
          • Insane: includes all persons of unsound mind. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
          • Insurance: means "property insurance" as defined in §. See Tennessee Code 56-41-101
          • insurance company: includes all corporations, associations, partnerships, or individuals engaged as principals in the business of insurance. See Tennessee Code 56-1-102
          • Interest rate: The amount paid by a borrower to a lender in exchange for the use of the lender's money for a certain period of time. Interest is paid on loans or on debt instruments, such as notes or bonds, either at regular intervals or as part of a lump sum payment when the issue matures. Source: OCC
          • Intestate: Dying without leaving a will.
          • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
          • Lease: means a transfer of the right to possession and use of goods for a term in return for consideration, but a sale, including a sale on approval or a sale or return, or retention or creation of a security interest is not a lease. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
          • Lease agreement: means the bargain, with respect to the lease, of the lessor and the lessee in fact as found in their language or by implication from other circumstances including course of dealing or usage of trade or course of performance as provided in this chapter. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Lease contract: means the total legal obligation that results from the lease agreement as affected by this chapter and any other applicable rules of law. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Least restrictive alternatives: means techniques and processes that preserve as many decision-making rights as practical under the particular circumstances for the person with a disability. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101
          • Lessee: means a person who acquires the right to possession and use of goods under a lease. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Lessor: means a person who transfers the right to possession and use of goods under a lease. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
          • Licensee: means a premium finance company holding a license issued under this chapter. See Tennessee Code 56-37-102
          • Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
          • Litigation: A case, controversy, or lawsuit. Participants (plaintiffs and defendants) in lawsuits are called litigants.
          • Lot: means a parcel or a single article that is the subject matter of a separate lease or delivery, whether or not it is sufficient to perform the lease contract. See Tennessee Code -103
          • Member: means any person included in the membership of the retirement system, as provided in chapter 35, part 1 of this title. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
          • Minor: has the meaning set forth in §. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
          • Minor: means any person who has not attained eighteen (18) years of age and who has not otherwise been emancipated. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

          • Misdemeanor: Usually a petty offense, a less serious crime than a felony, punishable by less than a year of confinement.

          • Mortgagee: The person to whom property is mortgaged and who has loaned the money.
          • National Bank: A bank that is subject to the supervision of the Comptroller of the Currency. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department.           • Natural disaster: means any hurricane, tornado, storm, flood, high water, wind-driven water, tidal wave, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, ice storm, drought, fire, explosion, civil disturbance or other catastrophe that causes or may cause substantial damage or injury to property. See Tennessee Code 4-31-803
          • Note: means any note authorized and issued pursuant to this chapter. See Tennessee Code 4-31-102
          • Oath: includes affirmation. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
          • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
          • Olympic competition: means the official Olympic games, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee, in which the United States competes as a national body. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1101
          • Oral argument: An opportunity for lawyers to summarize their position before the court and also to answer the judges' questions.
          • Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
          • participant: means any state employee who has joined the bank by making the initial donation of the minimum number of days necessary and has donated subsequently assessed days. See Tennessee Code 8-50-901
          • Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
          • Person: means an individual, trust, firm, joint stock company, corporation (including a government corporation), partnership, association, state, municipality, commission, political subdivision of a state, any interstate body, any governmental agency of this state and any department, agency or instrumentality of the federal government. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401
          • Person: includes a corporation, firm, company or association. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
          • person: includes an individual, insurer, company, association, organization, Lloyds, society, reciprocal insurer or interinsurance exchange, partnership, syndicate, business trust, corporation, agent, general agent, broker, solicitor, service representative, adjuster, and every legal entity. See Tennessee Code 56-32-102
          • Person: means an individual, partnership, association, business corporation, nonprofit corporation, common law trust, joint-stock company or any other group of individuals however organized. See Tennessee Code 56-37-102
          • Person: includes an individual, corporation, partnership, association, the state, a city, county, city and county, or other public entity or governmental subdivision or agency, or any other legal entity. See Tennessee Code 34-6-201
          • Person: means any individual, nonhuman entity or governmental agency. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101
          • Person: means an individual, a partnership, a corporation or an association. See Tennessee Code 34-5-102
          • Person: means any individual, nonhuman entity or governmental agency. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101
          • Person: means any individual, partnership, copartnership, firm, company, corporation, association, joint stock company, trust, estate, political subdivision, an agency, authority, commission or department of the United States government or of the state of Tennessee government, or any other legal entity, or their legal representative, agent, or assigns.           • Person: means an individual, trust, firm, joint stock company, corporation (including a government corporation), partnership, association, state, municipality, commission, political subdivision of a state, any interstate body, any governmental agency of this state and any department, agency or instrumentality of the federal government. See Tennessee Code 68-202-202
          • Person with a disability: means any person eighteen (18) years of age or older determined by the court to be in need of partial or full supervision, protection, and assistance by reason of mental illness, physical illness or injury, developmental disability, or other mental or physical incapacity. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

          • Physician: means a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine who is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Tennessee. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

          • Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
          • Political subdivision: means any Tennessee local governmental entity, including, but not limited to, any municipality, metropolitan government, county, utility district, school district, public building authority, and development district created and existing pursuant to the laws of Tennessee, or any instrumentality of government created by any one (1) or more of the named local governmental entities or by an act of the general assembly. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1202
          • Political subdivision: means any municipality, city, incorporated town, county, district or authority, or any portion or combination of two (2) or more thereof. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
          • post-employment benefits: means nonpension benefits paid on behalf of former employees or the former employees' beneficiaries after separation from service. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1202
          • Power of attorney: A written instrument which authorizes one person to act as another's agent or attorney.           • Presiding officer: A majority-party Senator who presides over the Senate and is charged with maintaining order and decorum, recognizing Members to speak, and interpreting the Senate's rules, practices and precedents.

          • Production facility: means :

            • (A) Any equipment or device capable of the production of special nuclear material in such quantity as to be of significance to the common defense and security, or in such manner as to affect the health and safety of the public. See Tennessee Code 68-202-101

              • Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
              • Radiation: includes all ionizing electromagnetic waves and corpuscular emissions such as, but not necessarily limited to, gamma rays and X-rays. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401
              • Radiation: means gamma rays and X-rays, alpha and beta particles, high-speed electrons, neutrons, protons, and other nuclear particles, but not sound or radio waves or visible, infrared, or ultraviolet light. See Tennessee Code 68-202-101

              • Record: means information that is inscribed on a tangible medium or that is stored in an electronic or other medium and is retrievable in a perceivable form. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
              • Regulations: means the standards, policies, rules and regulations promulgated by the board to attain and maintain ambient air quality standards within the intent and purpose of this part. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
              • Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
              • Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
              • Representative: when applied to those who represent a decedent, includes executors and administrators, unless the context implies heirs and distributees. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
              • Respondent: means a person who is a minor or is alleged to be a person with a disability for whom a fiduciary is being sought. See Tennessee Code 34-1-101

              • Savings and loan association: includes a building and loan association, a federal or state savings and loan association, a federal savings bank, and any other financial institution, the accounts of which are insured by the federal savings and loan insurance corporation (FSLIC) or any successor of such corporation.               • Sending agency: means any department or agency of the federal government or a state government which sends any employee thereof to another government agency under this part. See Tennessee Code 8-50-402
              • Service: means service as a general employee, a teacher, a state police officer, a wildlife officer, a firefighter, a police officer, a state judge, a county judge, an attorney general, a commissioner or a county official which is paid for by an employer, and also includes service for which a former member of the general assembly is entitled to under former §§ 3-401 and 3-406.               • Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
              • Sick leave: means a designated amount of compensated leave accumulated pursuant to part 8 of this chapter that is granted to a member who through personal illness, injury, disability or quarantine, is unable to perform the duties of the member's state position.               • Special nuclear material: means :

                • (A) Plutonium and uranium enriched in the isotope 233 or in the isotope 235, and any other material which the governor declares by order to be special nuclear material after the United States atomic energy commission has determined the material to be such.                 • Specific license: means a license issued by the department which allows the use, storage, handling, and possession of radioactive sources under specified conditions of the license. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401
                • Specific licensee: means a holder of a specific license issued by the department. See Tennessee Code 68-202-401
                • State: means the state of Tennessee. See Tennessee Code 4-31-102

                • State employee: means all employees in state service, legislative branch, and constitutional officers who accrue sick leave pursuant to part 8 of this chapter and all employees and teachers of all state special schools. See Tennessee Code 8-50-901

                • Student: means any person enrolled in a course of study in a school or in a post-secondary educational institution who as a condition of such enrollment is employed in a full-time position. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
                • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
                • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
                • Supplier: means a person from whom a lessor buys or leases goods to be leased under a finance lease. See Tennessee Code -103
                • Team: means any group leader, coach, official or athlete who comprises the official delegation of the United States to world, Pan-American or Olympic competition. See Tennessee Code 8-50-1101
                • Technical secretary: means the technical secretary of the air pollution control board. See Tennessee Code 68-201-102
                • Testate: To die leaving a will.
                • Testator: A male person who leaves a will at death.
                • Testify: Answer questions in court.
                • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
                • Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
                • Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
                • Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
                • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
