Terms Used In West Virginia Code > Chapter 18A > Article 1 - General Provisions

  • academy: means the academy created pursuant to section two-b, article three-a of this chapter. See West Virginia Code 18A-1-1
  • Alternative education: means an authorized departure from the regular school program designed to provide educational and social development for students whose disruptive behavior places them at risk of not succeeding in the traditional school structures and in adult life without positive interventions. See West Virginia Code 18A-1-1
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
  • in writing: includes any representation of words, letters, or figures, whether by printing, engraving, writing, or otherwise. See West Virginia Code 2-2-10
  • Long-term substitute: means a substitute employee who fills a vacant position:

    That the county superintendent expects to extend for at least thirty consecutive days, and is either:

    (A) Listed in the job posting as a long-term substitute position of over thirty days. See West Virginia Code 18A-1-1

  • Offense: includes every act or omission for which a fine, forfeiture, or punishment is imposed by law. See West Virginia Code 2-2-10
  • School personnel: means all personnel employed by a county board whether employed on a regular full-time basis, an hourly basis or otherwise. See West Virginia Code 18A-1-1
  • State: when applied to a part of the United States and not restricted by the context, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories, and the words "United States" also include the said district and territories. See West Virginia Code 2-2-10
