Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 40:20-82

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State. Whenever the board of chosen freeholders shall have appointed a committee of its members upon any matter within its jurisdiction, or to examine any officer of said board, or holding an appointment from said board in relation to the discharge of his official duties or conduct, or to the receipt or disbursement by him of any moneys in the discharge of said duties, or concerning the possession or disposal by him, in his official capacity of any property belonging to said board or to the county, or to inspect or examine any book, account, voucher or document in the possession or under the control of such officer, relating to the affairs or interest of said county, the chairman of the committee, or any member thereof, may administer an oath to any person attending as a witness before that committee.
