Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 40:43-20

  • Joint committee: Committees including membership from both houses of teh legislature. Joint committees are usually established with narrow jurisdictions and normally lack authority to report legislation.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • Testify: Answer questions in court.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
The joint committee shall have power to take testimony, issue subpoenas, compel the attendance of any of the officers of any of the municipalities affected, compel the production of all books and papers relating to the subject matter under consideration, and to administer oaths to any person appearing before the committee to testify. Its subpoenas, shall be enforceable, and misconduct of a witness may be dealt with, in the manner provided by the County and Municipal Investigations Law (1952).
