Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 40A:9-1.11

  • local unit: means a county or municipality. See New Jersey Statutes 40A:1-1
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
As used in this act:

a. “Candidate” means any person who shall file, or cause to have filed, a petition of nomination for election, or for election, to any local elective office;

b. “Local elective office” means any office of a local unit regularly filled at an election by the voters, but does not mean any office established by the State Constitution;

c. “Local unit” means a county or municipality, and, whenever an office is required to be filled by election from a district, ward or other subdivision means the district, ward or subdivision to which the office pertains;

d. “Resident” means a person having, within the territorial limits of the local unit, a place of abode, which has not been adopted for any mere special or temporary purpose, but is his ordinary and permanent domicile.
