Terms Used In South Carolina Code 63-17-710

  • Child: means a person under the age of eighteen. See South Carolina Code 63-1-40
  • Division: means the Child Support Enforcement Division of the State Department of Social Services. See South Carolina Code 63-17-720
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Payee: means a custodial parent on whose behalf child support payments are being collected or an agency or its designee in this or another state to which an assignment of rights to child support has been made. See South Carolina Code 63-17-720
Notwithstanding § 63-3-530 and any other provision of law, the Child Support Enforcement Division of the Department of Social Services, or its designee, also has jurisdiction to establish paternity, to establish and enforce child support, and to administratively change the payee in cases brought pursuant to Title IV-D of the Social Security Act in accordance with this article.
