  • Advice and consent: Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate, and international treaties become effective only when the Senate approves them by a two-thirds vote.
  • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
  • association: when used in reference to a corporation, shall be deemed to embrace the words "successors and assigns of such company or association" in like manner as if these last-named words, or words of similar import, were expressed. See
  • automotive fuel: means liquid fuel of a type distributed for use as a fuel in any motor vehicle. See
  • automotive fuel rating: means --

    (A) the octane rating of an automotive spark-ignition engine fuel. See

  • automotive fuel requirement: means , with respect to automotive fuel for use in a motor vehicle or a class thereof, imported, manufactured, or assembled by a manufacturer, the minimum automotive fuel rating of such automotive fuel which such manufacturer recommends for the efficient operation of such motor vehicle, or a substantial portion of such class, without knocking.   • automotive fuel retailer: means any person who markets automotive fuel to the general public for ultimate consumption. See
  • Board: means the National Processor Advertising and Promotion Board established under section 6407(b) of this title. See
  • commerce: means any trade, traffic, transportation, exchange, or other commerce--

    (A) between any State and any place outside of such State. See

  • commerce: means commerce between any State, Territory, or possession of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and any place outside thereof. See
  • commerce: includes interstate, foreign, and intrastate commerce. See
  • Commission: means the Federal Trade Commission. See
  • Committee: means the Committee on Earth and Environmental Sciences established under section 2932 of this title. See
  • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Council: means the Federal Coordinating Council on Science, Engineering, and Technology. See
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Department: means the Department of Agriculture. See
  • distributor: means any person who receives automotive fuel and distributes such automotive fuel to another person other than the ultimate purchaser. See
  • Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one.   • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.

  • Fur Products Name Guide: means the register issued by the Commission pursuant to section 69e of this title. See
  • global change: means changes in the global environment (including alterations in climate, land productivity, oceans or other water resources, atmospheric chemistry, and ecological systems) that may alter the capacity of the Earth to sustain life. See
  • global change research: means study, monitoring, assessment, prediction, and information management activities to describe and understand--

    (A) the interactive physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the total Earth system. See

  • Guarantor: A party who agrees to be responsible for the payment of another party's debts should that party default. Source: OCC
  • individual: shall include every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development. See
  • Injunction: An order of the court prohibiting (or compelling) the performance of a specific act to prevent irreparable damage or injury.
  • invoice: means a written account, memorandum, list, or catalog, which is issued in connection with any commercial dealing in fur products or furs, and describes the particulars of any fur products or furs, transported or delivered to a purchaser, consignee, factor, bailee, correspondent, or agent, or any other person who is engaged in dealing commercially in fur products or furs.   • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • manufacturer: means any person who imports, manufactures, or assembles motor vehicles for sale. See
  • marketing: means the sale or other disposition of soybeans or soybean products in any channel of commerce. See
  • Misdemeanor: Usually a petty offense, a less serious crime than a felony, punishable by less than a year of confinement.
  • motor vehicle: means any self-propelled four-wheeled vehicle, of less than 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, which is designed primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways. See

  • officer: includes any person authorized by law to perform the duties of the office. See
  • Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
  • person: means an individual, partnership, corporation, association, business trust, or any organized group of any of the foregoing. See

  • Plan: means the National Global Change Research Plan developed under section 2934 of this title, or any revision thereof. See

  • research: means market research to support advertising and promotion efforts, including educational activities, research directed to product characteristics, product development, including new products or improved technology in production, manufacturing or processing of milk and the products of milk.   • Secretary: means the Secretary of Agriculture. See
