(1) Within the State of Oregon’s kindergarten through grade 12 education system, proficiency for students in American Sign Language shall be in accordance with rules adopted by the State Board of Education pursuant to ORS Chapter 329 and any other applicable state or federal law.

(2) The State Board of Education is encouraged to continue to:

(a) Coordinate with public universities listed in ORS § 352.002 and the Oregon School for the Deaf to develop curricula for American Sign Language courses;

(b) Implement programs to locate and prepare qualified teachers and interpreters of American Sign Language; and

(c) Assist public high schools in identifying local and regional needs and resources available for American Sign Language courses. [1995 c.687 § 1; 2007 c.858 § 64; 2015 c.767 § 102]

 

329.489 was enacted into law by the Legislative Assembly but was not added to or made a part of ORS Chapter 329 or any series therein by legislative action. See Preface to Oregon Revised Statutes for further explanation.
